How Wash Wash Guys Target Kenyan Artists

Kenyan comedian Jalang’o is trending for all the wrong reasons. There is an expose that was done by blogger Cyprian Nyakundi on Monday, September 11 alleging that the comedian is part of a fake Gold scam.

“Cyprian Nyakundi has just linked Zaheer Jhanda, Allan Chesang and Jalango ,Jalas, to Sh1 Billion Fake Gold Scam. People are speculating that Matiangi was right about electing Wash wash guys into our Parliament, Be the Judge!!!,” popular blogger Pauline Njoroge posted.

This is just but a taste of what has been happening for a while now. The Kenyan entertainment industry has become a hub for money laundering activities. We have witnessed upcoming artists hit with one song and suddenly buy land or cars and live a flashy lifestyle. This has put a lot of pressure on other artists who are doing genuine work.

A few Kenyan artists have been brought to the limelight and after just a single hit, they move to Kilimani and other posh areas.

Recently, a fan commented on one of Willy Paul’s Instagram post and inquired where the artists was getting his money. The fan noted that the singer did not have any brand endorsements or numerous shows but could still afford to release projects with consistency.

I am not alleging that Willy Paul is a Wash Wash guy but we have some who are into the whole scam.

The most notable areas of Wash Wash are in the viral betting sites that keep cropping up daily. So many artists and content creators have become targets. An artists shows some form of influence and they immediately end up on a brand.

Kenyan artists keep advertising these sites without prior knowledge or any background information.

Another area is the land deals that are in almost all Kenyan artists’ content. Cheap land being sold in unknown locations have become another strong front for money laundering.

The fight is against poverty, yes, but the pressure to get rich is also saturating the market. That is why despite the ‘endorsements’ only a few artists survive in the industry without shows.
